What is Red Salt Coarse?

This red coarse salt is a Hawaiian sea salt mixed with red Alaea clay.

The clay gives the salt its deep red colour. It comes from volcanic soil and contains iron oxide which is what gives it that strong shade.

This salt has a very different look from ordinary white sea salt. The crystals are larger too which makes it easy to sprinkle over food or use during cooking.

Alaea salt has been used in Hawaiian cooking for a long time. It also has a history of being used in traditional Hawaiian ceremonies.

Using Red Salt in Cooking

The coarse crystals work well with meat and fish.

You can use red salt with pork or seafood. It also works well with roasted vegetables and other savoury food.

Some people sprinkle it over food at the end. The red crystals are easy to notice and give the dish a bit more colour.

It can work with sweet food too.

Chocolate is one example. The salt adds a sharp contrast to the sweetness.

The crystals are fairly big. They can be easily grinded down with a grinder.
