Why choose a large salt lamp over a smaller salt lamp?

A Larger salt lamp has a few obvious differences compared with smaller ones. They give off more visible light and tend to stand out much more when you walk into the room.

If you are looking for a floor-standing salt lamp, going bigger usually makes more sense. A smaller lamp can look a little lost on the floor and while a larger one can sit nicely in the corner of a room without needing a table or bedside cabinet underneath it.

We have a wide selection of lamps in larger sizes and measure these by weight in kilograms. Our large salt lamp collection ranges from around 5kg all the way up to 30kg.

Each lamp has its own dimensions because the salt is naturally different and the lamps are shaped individually. As a general rule, the heavier the lamp is, the larger it will be.

Our larger salt lamps still use a standard UK plug just like the smaller versions. Check the individual product page for the bulb and fitting used with the lamp.

If you have a darker room and want to add a warm extra light. A larger salt lamp can work well. The bigger size also makes it much more noticeable as part of the room rather than looking like a small table lamp.

A Large Salt Lamp as a Feature in the Room

One of the main reasons to choose a larger salt lamp is simply the way it looks.

It can also be used as an extra light in the evening when you do not want the main room light on.

A large Himalayan salt lamp then it is going to be much more noticeable than one of the smaller sizes.

Each lamp has its own shape and markings, so the one you receive will not look the same as another lamp of the same weight.

The salt used for these lamps comes from Pakistan. Its pink and orange colouring comes from minerals naturally found in the salt.

Dimension and Height

The larger it will generally be if the lamp is heavier. Here are some rough estimates:

5–7kg – 23cm in height

6–8kg – 25cm

8–10kg – 28cm

10–12kg – 30cm

12–15kg – 32cm

15–20kg – 35cm

20–25kg – 38cm

25–30kg – 41cm

40–50kg – 45cm

These are only rough dimensions. The exact height and shape can vary because each piece of salt is different.

Choosing Between 5kg and 30kg

The weight makes quite a difference to how the lamp looks in a room.

A 5kg or 6kg lamp is still a decent size and it is much easier to place on a cabinet or side table.

The lamp starts to feel more like a feature on its own once you get into heavier sizes.

A 20kg or 30kg lamp will need more floor space. You probably will not want to keep moving it around once you have found a place for it.

Weight alone does not always tell you exactly how tall or wide the lamp will be.

Moving a Large Salt Lamp

Large salt lamps can be heavier than they look.

If you need to move one you should lift the lamp itself rather than pulling it along by the cable if you need to move the lamp.

Take a bit of care around the rough edges too. Salt can chip if it gets knocked against furniture or a hard floor.

With the bigger sizes and it is easier to decide where you want the lamp before you unpack it properly.

That way you only need to move it once.

Unpacking a Large Salt Lamp

Take your time when you open the box.

There may be a little loose salt dust around the lamp from being moved during delivery. That is fairly normal with rough salt.

Lift it out carefully and check the base before putting it down.

It is also worth having a quick look at the cable and bulb fitting before you plug it in.

What if the Lamp Has Small Chips or Marks?

Natural salt is not perfectly smooth.

You may see rough edges or small lines running through the lamp. Some pieces also have darker patches or little chips around the outside.

That does not automatically mean the lamp is damaged.

If a large section has broken away or the base has been damaged during delivery.

It is worth checking the lamp properly when you first unpack it so you can tell the difference between the natural surface and actual damage.
