What Makes White Himalayan Salt So Unique?

Salt lamps are becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason, but why are salt lamps seemingly different colors? Does the color of the salt lamp affect its ability to purify the air? Fortunately, the answer to that question is “no.” In fact, all salt lamps release negative ions that make the surrounding air a lot healthier, and it doesn’t matter what color they are.

The Color of Salt Lamps

Salt lamps can range in color from white to pink to orange and even a deep red. It is the iron content in the lamp that affects what color it is, but it only affects the color and nothing else. Because of this, a white salt lamp is just as effective at purifying the air as one that is dark red in color.

Some salt lamps, in fact, are actually a combination of several of these colors, making for a very striking lamp in the end. And salt lamps do not just contain iron. They contain other minerals as well, and it’s the combination of these minerals that give each lamp its unique color.

Salt lamps can have 80 or more different minerals in them, which are found within the salt crystals used to make the lamp. The richer the iron content, the more vibrant the pinks, oranges, and reds are in the crystal itself. Iron affects all minerals this way. For instance, selenite is a mineral that is typically white, but if there is enough iron in it, the color changes to bright orange.

And amethyst, which most people associate with the color purple, can become citrine, which is light yellow or even orange when infused with enough iron. As you can see, the amount of iron infused into various minerals can drastically change the color of those minerals, and this is what happens with salt lamps as well.

Why a White Himalayan Salt Lamp?

A white salt lamp is made out of mineral salt that is typically found in the outer parts of the salt mine. Remember that the lighter the color of the lamp, the less iron content it has. This means that salt lamps that are white in color have very low iron content in the crystal.

And if you’re wondering how common white Himalayan salt is, it is not very common. Because of this, if you buy a salt lamp that is white in color, which many people prefer, it may be priced a little higher than other colored lamps.

Of course, you should also keep in mind that light-colored salt lamps purify the air just as well as salt lamps that are darker in color. Remember that the color of the lamp makes no difference when it comes to how well it does its job.

The most common colors for salt lamps include:

  • Pink Himalayan salt, which can be pink and have tinges of red and white.
  • Black Himalayan salt, which is actually a reddish-gray color and is also called Kala Namak. These lamps have a lot of sulphur in them and this type of salt is sometimes used to spice up authentic Indian dishes.
  • Red Himalayan salt, which is usually either dark red or dark orange in color.

The Many Benefits of a Salt Lamp

Pollutants in the air are made up of positive ions, and the negative ions released by a salt lamp attach themselves to the positive ones and essentially disintegrate them. This happens regardless of the color of the salt lamp.

Some people claim that the darker salt lamps have a more calming effect on the environment, but this has not been proven scientifically. The truth is that salt lamps work amazingly well regardless of what color they are, and most people are very happy with them.
