What Makes White Himalayan Salt Different?

Himalayan salt lamps do not all come in the same colour.

Some are the usual pink or orange. Others are much paler and can look almost white.

The colour comes from the salt itself and the minerals found in it. That is why two lamps can be the same sort of size but still look quite different.

What Does a White Salt Lamp Look Like When Lit?

A white salt lamp can look quite plain when it is switched off. Once the bulb is on, the colour changes quite a bit.

Some parts may look creamy or pale yellow. Other areas can still have a little pink or orange showing through.

The light will not always come through evenly either. Thicker parts of the salt can stay darker while thinner areas look brighter.

It also depends on the room. In daylight, the lamp may look fairly subtle.

That is why the same lamp can look a little different during the day and at night.

Different Salt Lamp Colours

You can get Himalayan salt in quite a few shades.

Some pieces are pale pink. Others are orange or much darker red.

White salt is at the lighter end of the range.

Iron is one of the things that can affect the colour. Some pieces have very little visible colour while others have much stronger pink or orange areas.

You can also get more than one shade in the same lamp. One side might be quite pale while another has a darker patch running through it.

That sort of variation is normal with natural salt.

Natural Colour and Variation

No two salt lamps are going to look the same.

One white lamp may be almost cream in colour while another could have pale pink or darker sections running through it.

These differences come from the natural material itself and are part of what you should expect when buying a Himalayan salt lamp.

If you prefer a lighter coloured lamp, then the white styles are worth looking at. If you want something with stronger pink or orange colouring. The darker salt lamps may suit you better.

Why Choose a White Himalayan Salt Lamp?

White salt lamps have a lighter look than the usual pink or orange ones.

When the lamp is off, the salt can look very pale. Once it is switched on, you may see a bit more warmth coming through the colour.

If you prefer something less orange, then a white salt lamp might suit the room better.

White pieces are not as common as the usual pink salt either. The choice of shapes and sizes can sometimes be smaller.

If you are choosing one mainly for the colour, then have a proper look through the product photos first.

The exact shade will still vary from one lamp to another.

You may come across:

Pink salt with pale or darker areas
Orange or red pieces
Darker salt with grey or reddish tones
White salt with a much lighter overall look

No two pieces are going to be the same and that is part of the look of natural salt.

What If the Lamp Feels Damp?

Salt can sometimes feel damp on the outside.

It is worth checking underneath the lamp as well. You should dry the surface before putting the lamp back if there is any moisture.

I would avoid keeping a salt lamp in a bathroom or right next to a sink.

A damp windowsill is not a great place either.

If the lamp sits on wooden furniture then putting something underneath it can also be useful.

Unpacking Your Lamp

Take a little care when you first get the lamp out of the box.

You might see a bit of loose salt dust in the packaging. Small grains can also come away from the rough edges while the lamp is being moved around during delivery.

That does not always mean there is anything wrong with it.

Once it is out of the box give the lamp a quick look over.

Check that it is sitting properly on the base and have a look at the cable and fitting before plugging it in.

If the lamp is quite heavy then decide where you want it first. It is easier than carrying it around the room several times afterwards.

Small rough marks are normal with natural salt. A large crack or obvious damage from delivery is different and should be checked before you use the lamp.

White Salt Lamp or Pink Salt Lamp?

The main difference is really the look.

A traditional pink salt lamp normally has much stronger orange and pink colouring. A white salt lamp is much paler and has a less obvious orange appearance when it is sitting in the room.

If you already have a lot of neutral colours around the house, then you may prefer the white version.

Others prefer the deeper colour of the usual pink salt.
