What is Pink Himalayan Salt?

The colour is not always the same. Some pieces are very light pink while others are much darker or have more of an orange look.

Most people know it as a cooking salt. But it is used for other things too. You will see it in bath salts and body scrubs. Larger pieces are also used to make salt lamps and candle holders.

You can also get big solid blocks that are sold as salt licks for livestock.

There are quite a few different types around now. It is worth checking what the particular product is meant for before you use it.

What Does It Look Like?

Normal table salt is usually white and ground quite finely.

Pink Himalayan salt looks quite different. Depending on the type you buy, it can come as fine salt or in larger coarse pieces.

The colour is not always the same either. Some pieces are very pale pink while others can be much darker.

That variation comes from the salt itself.

Himalayan Salt Candle Holders

Smaller blocks of salt can also be cut to make candle holders.

A space is made in the salt for a tea light. The light shows through the surrounding salt once the candle is lit.

The exact colour and finish will vary from one piece to another.

Our salt candle holder collection includes different shapes and sizes.

Pink Himalayan Salt Licks

Himalayan salt is also sold in larger blocks as salt licks for livestock.

These are normally left as solid pieces rather than being ground down.

If you are buying a salt product for an animal. Check that the particular item is intended for that purpose and follow the instructions supplied with it.

Fine or Coarse Pink Himalayan Salt?

The main difference you will notice is the size of the grains.

Fine salt has much smaller pieces, while coarse salt is made up of larger crystals.

Which one you choose depends on what you are buying it for.

Products intended for cooking can be different from salt sold for decorative or other uses.

They Make Them into Himalayan Salt Lamps

Larger pieces of salt can be shaped into lamps.

A space is cut out inside for the light. Once the lamp is on the pink and orange parts of the salt become much easier to see once the lamp is on.

The colour and markings will not be the same on every lamp.

Have a look at our Himalayan salt lamp range if you want to see the different shapes and sizes we have.

Natural Colour and Variation

Pink Himalayan salt is never completely uniform.

One bag might have mostly pale crystals while another has darker pink or orange pieces mixed through it.

You may also notice lighter sections or different shades in the same piece of salt.

Pink Himalayan Salt for Cooking

You will normally see it sold either fine or coarse for cooking.

The finer salt can be used straight from the packet. The larger crystals are more suited to a grinder.

The size of the grains can vary quite a lot between products, so have a quick look at the listing first.

If you are buying it to use with food, then make sure the product is actually sold for cooking.

Pink Himalayan Salt for Baths and Scrubs

Some Himalayan salt is sold for use in baths or body scrubs.

This can look quite different from the salt you would keep in the kitchen.

Not every bag of Himalayan salt is made for the same thing. Check the product details before using it.

That way you know whether you are buying cooking salt or something made for another use.
